DARPA has designed an unmanned sub-hunter. It is a type of drone. It is known as ACTUV (Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vehicle). Drone is under development.
ACTUV is different from military drones. A military drone can only fly for 30 hours but DARPA claims that ACTUV can fly for 60 to 90 days. One more thing ACTUV is not armed.
How it works?
As soon as drone is on air from a naval ship, it starts it work. It uses long-range acquisition sonar and other sensors to scan the water beneath it. It also keeps itself safe from other ships.
Once ACTUV got something, it will convey the message to nearby ship through satellite. If the person on the ship thinks that it’s not a submarine he will ping back to ACTUV and then ACTUV will move on in its search.
The video below shows the working of ACTUV. This video is released by Science Applications International Corporation, who is also a partner in this project. They has a deal worth $ 58 million.
